Ethical Theories of Thomas Aquinas and Karol Wojtyla who became Pope John Paul II. What must I do to be Good?

The Unity of Law and Virtue Project

As we enter a new millennium we can sense a general longing for a rebirth of a sense of purpose and community based on morality which responds to the needs of the person in all her or his physical and psychological reality. This longing uncovers complex questions:

  • What does it mean to be good or bad?
  • Where does morality come from? Merely from the written law? Is morality just a human invention/convention? Is it true that what is not forbidden by the government is allowed? Or is there something else going on? Something beyond the human being itself?
  • Can we talk of a "purpose" of morality? If so, what is that purpose? Economic prosperity? Peace and order? The goodness of the individual persons?
  • How are law and morality related, if at all?

This website provides some answers to these questions in the context of the ethics of Aristotle, the natural law theory of Thomas Aquinas and the theory of self-determination in the writings of Karol Wojtyla.
